Donald Trump, the American President, and Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister, met in Sharm El-Sheikh on Monday at the signing ceremony of the Gaza peace process agreement. Trump then praised Orbán sky-high and announced that he would achieve a greater victory than in 2022 (which suggests about four-fifths). However, tonight the Prime Minister revealed that he will also further assist the White House leader before the 2026 elections.

Orbán will win, according to Trump

Trump believes that if he takes someone’s side, they are necessarily destined to win. For example, yesterday he stood beside Javier Milei, the Argentinian president, implying that if his South American friend loses parliamentary support in the elections on October 26, he will not give support.

It seems that the American President considers Orbán’s situation even more certain than that, as he hasn’t even considered that he might lose. Trump directly told Orbán that thanks to him, he won in 2022 by 28 points (this is a mistake; the difference was ‘only’ about 20% between the opposition alliance and the Fidesz list). Now, however, he will also stand fully behind him again and, therefore, in his view, will win even more convincingly. Of course, it is also possible that Trump was already revealing the final outcome of the 2026 election to his audience.

He would have already brought peace to Ukraine

Orbán spoke extensively with Mandiner, the government party outlet, tonight about the Gaza peace process and Trump’s role, praising the President’s performance, while earlier Péter Szijjártó, the Foreign Minister, indicated that according to the Hungarian government, Trump would be the best recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Orbán says the American president would have already achieved peace in Ukraine, too, if it weren’t for Ursula von der Leyen and the European Commission’s sabotage efforts, who are inciting President Zelensky of Ukraine. This completely contradicts the news reports suggesting that Trump believes Zelensky should obtain more effective weapons, which is why there is now talk about him potentially receiving Tomahawk missiles for Kyiv.

A Trump-Orbán summit is coming soon

The Hungarian Prime Minister also mentioned that they might soon meet with the President. He did not reveal whether Trump will travel here or if he may need to go to Washington instead. Earlier, experts speculated that the American President might visit Budapest (the first and only time was in 1989 when George H. W. Bush came). According to them, the American president might come to Budapest for the CPAC in the spring. Partly this is why the government is investing so much money in organising the event, aiming to maximise this potentially historic visit before the elections.

According to him, 80% of the negotiation topics have already been settled, and once the remaining 20% is also confirmed, they will schedule a date. It’s easy to guess that this date will probably be in the spring, sometime before the elections, also demonstrating Orbán’s international support and acceptance.

Trump holds Orbán in high regard because he can rely on him

Orbán mainly mentioned economic topics as the key issues to be discussed with the president. He emphasised the renegotiation of the agreement on avoiding double taxation, which was abolished during the Biden administration and has not yet been renegotiated with the new American government. Orbán pointed out the difficulty of this, as he believes such an agreement is incompatible with current American foreign trade policies, so he expects tough negotiations.

The upcoming Trump-Orbán summit before the elections could be beneficial for the Prime Minister, as he believes that the opposition still cannot comprehend the fact that he received an invitation to the peace summit directly from the American President. He insists that neither Hungary’s economic, political, nor military strength justifies this; the only reason is that Trump has always been able to count on him. According to Orbán, everyone has betrayed the President except for Fidesz, and Trump knows this about him and his government. Orbán believes Hungary is part of an international peace camp led by Trump, which is why he counts on us.
