According to Szabolcs Panyi, a Hungarian journalist, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán could be flying to Moscow this weekend, coinciding with Russian President Vladimir Putin returning that very day from his three-day visit to Kyrgyzstan. The Government Information Centre neither confirmed nor denied the trip. Today, CBS, the American television broadcaster, reported that the Ukrainians have accepted the peace terms, although they added that a few “minor details” still need to be worked out, a point also confirmed by Donald Trump.

Ukraine peace deal on the horizon?

The American president believes significant progress has been made towards ending the war in Ukraine. The original 28-point American proposal has been substantially reduced and is under negotiation, yet Trump says only a few minor points require clarification. Meanwhile, reports suggest the acceptance may be in doubt because Putin insists on holding on to parts of Ukraine not under Russian occupation, which Kyiv understandably refuses to accept as peace conditions.

Nonetheless, Trump is sending his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to Moscow to meet the Russian president. At the same time, the US Under Secretary of Defence, Dan Driscoll, is negotiating with the Ukrainians. The American president is highly determined to end the war; he claims to have concluded eight conflicts in his nine months in office and is not far from closing the one in Ukraine.

PM Orbán may travel to Moscow

Joining this effort could be Prime Minister Orbán, who last July embarked on a “peace tour” to Russia and China. However, the move failed to gain support from European allies, and even the White House greeted his explorations with coolness.

According to Szabolcs Panyi’s information—about which he plans to report more extensively in Thursday’s Vsquare English newsletter as per his Facebook post—Orbán will fly to the Russian capital on Friday to meet Putin. The Government Information Centre did not deny the trip but also did not confirm it. They responded that the public would be informed about the prime minister’s foreign travels as usual. Panyi wrote that his information comes from well-informed, reliable sources, though he has not shared more details yet.

Both Trump and Putin support Orbán

The idea that the parties might arrive in Budapest within weeks to continue talks first surfaced during Trump and Putin’s Alaska meeting. However, at that time, Putin presented unacceptable demands (mainly territorial concessions), forcing the American president to pull the brakes. Since then, both the Hungarian government and President Trump have indicated they are ready to end the conflict in Budapest.

Orbán faces an unprecedented test in April 2026 with the parliamentary elections, as for the first time since the summer-autumn of 2006, Fidesz is not the favourite. Péter Magyar’s party leads significantly everywhere except in government-aligned institutes’ polls. Interestingly, both Trump and Putin expressed support towards Orbán for the upcoming election.
