The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has submitted a bid to the European Union to finance to its plans to replace trees and renew public spaces along the city’s Grand Boulevard, BKK said on Tuesday.
The metropolitan project aims to increase the number of trees, add more green surfaces and provide more room for pedestrians, BKK said, adding that the city was seeking 5.47 billion forints (EUR 14.2m) of EU funding.
Earlier, BKK won some 4.5 billion forints in community funding for cycle paths, making pedestrian crossings wheelchair-accessible, and other logistical developments serving shops along the boulevard, BKK noted.

Pedestrians don’t need more space. The sidewalks on Nagykorut are more than wide enough. There’s plenty of parking. Traffic flow is good.
How about, instead, they “revamp” the passage under Erzsebet hid on the lower rakpart, especially on the Pest side? It is narrow, dingy, uneven, potholed, and the metal grills that widen it for the boat visitors are super slippery at the best of times.
Or fix the sidewalk on the northern side of Petofi hid, where water is pooled for a good week after it rains, making it impassable without stepping into the several deep puddles? The same with the sidewalk on the Arpad hid, just after the on-off ramp, toward Pest?
Of course not. Not “green” enough.
