Turizmus reported that between 2012 and 2019, the number of people arriving, departing or changing flights at Budapest Airport increased by 90%. Still, in the first half of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the airport performed a 56% fallback regarding the number of passengers.

This means that instead of the estimated 17 million passengers, only 8 million will arrive at the gate of Hungary.

Although flights were cancelled due to travel restrictions the airport remained open and lost almost 1 million EUR/day. From August more flights are put back on the track, and the airport estimates more passengers. Due to travel restrictions and the categorisation of countries the airport aims to open a brand-new coronavirus testing centre.

People arriving at the airport will have the opportunity with the help of the new centre to immediately get a negative test, or the necessary medical assistance and mandatory quarantine if it is positive.

In 2021, Budapest Airport would like to increase its number of passengers by 83%.
