Ukrainians to be offered jobs in the construction industry in Hungary?

There is a shortage of skilled workers and engineers in all fundamental positions in the construction industry. The shortage could be reduced by involving refugees, so the National Union of Construction Entrepreneurs (ÉVOSZ) asked for the participation of its member organisations for the temporary employment of Ukrainians in Hungary due to the Russian-Ukrainian war.

According to the association, in addition to reducing labour shortages, temporary or long-term employment may be appropriate for refugees to lead a normal life. If they manage to get a job and can stay in Hungary more securely, they have to worry about financial problems less, writes karpathir.hu.

Incidentally, the employment of Ukrainians in Hungary is not new, there have been efforts to reduce labour shortages in the past, starting before the covid pandemic.

In 2019, the Hungarian government passed a decision, according to which Serbian and Ukrainian citizens can take up temporary work in Hungary in various occupations, without a work permit.

Of course, the shutdown caused by the coronavirus and the resulting economic consequences have completely redrawn the situation, and it looks like what had to stop in the last 2 years due to Covid is now continuing due to the unfortunate consequences of the war.

  1. If only it were that simple. Ukrainian qualifications in fields like engineering and medicine are not recognised by Hungarian bodies (nor other EU countries) without a long and convoluted process to confirm parity with local qualifications. This process includes a language skill exam in Hungarian (for obvious reasons).
