Change language:
A group of talented Hungarian engineering students form the BME Racing Team which has been taking part in Formula Student for over a decade, usually finishing at the forefront. They are building an electric driverless car this year.
Formula Student is a series of races held worldwide, where university students above 18 years of age compete in designing and constructing race cars. Then, the teams also race each other, Forbes reports.
“Formula Student is Europe’s most established educational engineering competition, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018. Backed by industry and high-profile engineers, the competition aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers and encourage more young people to take up a career in engineering.”
BME Racing Team
BME Racing team was the first Hungarian team to enter Formula Student in 2008. So, they are pioneers in this field. BME Racing Team was formed in 2007, but three other similar Hungarian groups were formed after theirs. The team had 5-7 members in the beginning, but now, they have more than 40-60. Now, the team consists of students not only from Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) but also from Budapest Corvinus University and Óbuda University.
Back in 2007, the team built a petrol-fuelled car called Justin; because it was finished just in time, and the car’s engine was started for the first time on the day of the race. They built their first electric car in 2010. They were racing with two cars between 2010 and 2013, but this year, they are going to take off with only one car. The driverless category was introduced in 2017. They were among the first ones to enter this category.
