Szijjarto: Hungary, Slovakia should rely on “success stories” to resolve contentious issues

Bratislava, October 7 (MTI) – Hungary and Slovakia can find solutions to “hot topics” between them by relying on joint success stories, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said on Tuesday after meeting his Slovak counterpart.

Szijjarto, who is on his first official trip as minister, said it was not by chance that he had travelled to Bratislava on this first trip. Hungarian-Slovak ties are strategically important and they constitute an important cog in the wheel of wider central European cooperation, he said. Although “hot topics” exist between the two countries, these must be addressed in a civilised, European way, and shared success stories can help in these endeavours, he said.

He mentioned as an example the Hungarian-Slovak interconnector linking up the two countries’ gas networks, set for completion on Jan. 1, which is one of the most important central European energy investments.

Under another joint project already under way, the two countries plan to double the number of their shared border crossings and a motorway linking Hungary’s Miskolc in the north-east to the border will start before the end of the year, he said. This link will create motorway access between Kosice (Kassa) in Slovakia and Miskolc, he added.
