FM Sikorski: Hungary directly harms Poland’s security interests
Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski on Monday launched a blistering attack on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, accusing Budapest of undermining European solidarity by blocking key EU decisions on sanctions against Russia, military funding for Ukraine and defense reimbursements for EU member states.
Speaking at a press conference in Warsaw, Sikorski described Hungary’s actions as “outrageous, but not surprising,” arguing that they are directly harming Poland’s security interests as well as the EU’s collective response to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Sikorski said Hungary is preventing the release of reimbursements from the European Peace Facility, which compensates EU countries that have supplied military equipment to Ukraine.
“This is a blockage of around €7 billion ($8.3 billion),” Sikorski said, adding that Poland alone is waiting for roughly €500 million (about 2 billion zlotys) earmarked for its Armed Forces Modernization Fund. “Despite negotiations, Hungary remains implacable,” he said, accusing Budapest of obstructing efforts to support countries that have assisted Ukraine.
Sikorski accused Hungary of violating the principle of European solidarity enshrined in the Treaty of Lisbon, saying Budapest was using EU decision-making procedures to pursue internal political goals and anti-Ukrainian narratives.
The foreign minister also criticized Hungary for blocking the EU’s 20th package of sanctions against Russia and for delaying approval of a major EU loan package for Ukraine. He said that such moves weaken the EU’s leverage over Moscow and prolong the war by allowing continued financial flows to the Kremlin.
“For some reason, Hungary prefers to buy oil and gas from Vladimir Putin, even though it has the technical ability to source supplies from the south at comparable prices,” Sikorski said.
“The goal of the entire community should be to cut off funding for the Russian war machine.”
Hungary has repeatedly defended its position by citing national energy security and domestic economic concerns, arguing that sanctions and supply disruptions would disproportionately harm Hungarian consumers.

Sikorski said what he said and I can only totally agree with it. The bottom-line is that Russia always has been and continues to be a massive military threat to Europe that needs to be taken completely seriously. The complaint is that Hungary has been undermining European security. I will point out the blatant example of Hungary’s obstruction of Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO for almost two years. Fidesz never provided any coherent reason for it and ended up being the very last to sign on. Whose interest was it to leave Sweden and Finland hanging like that? It was completely counter to European security.
Russia and Poland have been at each other, for centuries, just like the Hatfields and the McKoys.
Poland has many times conquered and held large parts of Russia and, in general, been aggressive.
Russia has, many times, returned the favour.
When Napoleon invaded Russia, over 1/3 of his European army was Polish!
When WWII was in the offing, Poland attacked Slovakia.
So, nobody is a victim here.
The Polish leadership, at this time in history, it seems to me, is doing the EXACT same stupid stuff they did in the 1930s – align themselves with Britain and France, now plus the disUnited States – they, the Poles, thinking that The West is going to save them from Russia and Prussia.
But … My Dear President Nawrocki, The West, nor NATO, can save you from your own malice and eternal grudge-carrying.
No, instead, learn how to stop hating Germans and Russians, and figure out how to develop friendly relations.
Need some instruction – look at Viktor Orban, and how he manages this.
Orban is NOT fighting the previous centuries’ wars, nor allowing previous national traumas and grievances to dictate Hungary’s current policy needs.
He is in the moment, and making excellent foreign policy decisions for his nation.
Orban has absorbed history’s lessons.
Poland, or better said, The Polish Elite, has not.
I have dear Polish friends, and have had them for a long time.
They are smarter than their leadership.
If you are going to use Napoleonic wars as part of an excuse for 21st century Russian barbarism no one can have an intelligent discussion.
You really don’t have to respond to every piece of nonsense that is demonstrably completely false and is only intended to provoke.
