Budapest, March 12 (MTI) – Hungary’s parliament will vote on the country’s next president on Monday, the lawmakers’ agenda shows. George Soros, the Hungarian-born US billionaire, is behind the candidacy of László Majtényi for Hungary’s president, the communications director for governing Fidesz said at a press conference on Sunday.

The ruling Fidesz-Christian-Democrat alliance has nominated János Áder, the incumbent president, for the next five-year term, while the leftist opposition has put forward former data protection commissioner László Majtenyi.

The president will be selected in a secret ballot in a single round if one of the candidates garners two thirds of the vote. Otherwise a second round will be held in which a simple majority will decide.

The process of electing the president will start at 9.30 in the morning.
