Orban: ‘No return’ from multicultural Europe – conference

Budapest, June 2 (MTI) – Europe is experiencing modern-day migration, which can change the face of its whole civilisation, a process that is “irreversible”, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told a conference on Tuesday.

Addressing an event held to celebrate the 85th birthday of former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, Orban said there was “no return” from a multicultural Europe, “either to a Christian Europe or to the world of national cultures”.

Hungarians have always looked on Germany’s reunification as a token of their own independence and freedom, he told the event organised jointly by the 20th Century Institute and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.

It was Helmut Kohl who had opened up the possibility for Europe’s reunification, as well as for the European Union’s enlargement policy, Orban noted, adding that a unified Germany is the only “irrevocable guarantee that Hungary will not be occupied again and the Cold War will not return”.

Orban raised the issue of capital punishment and said it was not possible to introduce it and Hungary had no such plan. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker is right: “no member state can introduce rules which go against the EU’s basic charter,” he said.
