Budapest, December 14 (MTI) – Newly-elected Fidesz deputy chairman Gabor Kubatov said one of his main goals in his new post would be to politically mobilise young people.

Kubatov told MTI after Sunday’s Fidesz congress that it is important to develop a new strategy to invigorate the next generation’s engagement in politics and to strengthen young people’s sense of community and national belonging.

On the subject of migration, Kubatov said the fact that over 1.5 million people have signed the ruling party’s petition against the European Union’s migrant quota scheme demonstrates that the majority is firmly behind Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s policies on migration.

He said Orban is the only European leader today who is protecting his country and adhering to EU law, adding that Orban has become one of the most well-known and popular politicians in Europe.

Kubatov said nobody signing the petition against the quota system was obliged to provide personal details. Referring to past allegations of having illegally stored a list of potential Fidesz voters, Kubatov said: “There was never any Kubatov list, nor will there be one this time.” He said the data protection authority is constantly monitoring the signature drive and has yet to find any errors or irregularities in the process.
