Museologist stole from the Hungarian National Museum

Police are charging him with stealing art objects worth more than 30 million HUF (EUR 89,000).

According to Napi, the court already sentenced the 64-year-old former museologist to two years in prison, suspended for four years. Furthermore, he was ordered to pay 250 thousand HUF (EUR 750) of fine.

Based on the charges, the defendant stole 20 statuettes, 73 engravings, and 56 paintings between the fall of 2016 and October 2017 from the store of the Hungarian National Museum. Most of the art objects are from the 20th century, but there were pieces made by known and unknown artists from the 18th and 19th centuries. The defendant placed the stolen stuff in a curiosity shop in District 7 and

sold some of them for 3.1 million HUF (EUR 8,900)

while the total sum of the art objects he stole from the museum was worth 30 million HUF (EUR 89 thousand). Police found all of them during a house search and gave them back to the museum.
