Hungary’s Chief Medical Officer under police protection due to death threats

An unknown perpetrator is threatening Hungary’s Chief Medical Officer for months. The investigation of the online threats is still in progress, until the end of which Cecília Müller (62) is under constant police protection.

With the development of technology, intimidating threats have become more and more common in the online space. According to the cybersecurity expert asked by the Hungarian news portal Blikk, this type of investigation requires a lot of energy and resources,

but the perpetrators typically make small mistakes that lead to their failure.

Accordingly, the authorities examine whether the source can be linked to a device with a specific technical solution and request the information available to the service provider. This can reveal a lot to an e-mail account, but social networking sites also collect a lot of information about the user themselves, such as where they logged in, when and what they were doing. Just like in the case of the former Hungarian ambassador to Peru who once accidentally forgot to turn on encryption and was identified based on his IP address.
