House Speaker: Hungary’s place in western integration, without submitting to foreign interests

Hungary’s place is without a doubt within the framework of western integration but it should be without subordinating its interests to foreign interests, House Speaker László Kövér said in an interview with daily Magyar Idők.

Speaking on the occasion of Saint Stephen’s Day on August 20, when Hungary celebrates the establishment of the Hungarian state by King Saint Stephen in 1000 AD, Kövér told the paper that Saint Stephen faced similar challenges as the challenges of today and the performance of the state under Saint Stephen offers an important point of reference for today’s public life. Saint Stephen governed according to western standards without letting the country sink into German serfdom, he said.

“The main opponent of our country today is the Brussels bureaucracy, especially the European Commission, which oversteps its competence when it tries to become a political actor. In the quota scheme lawsuit [which Hungary and Slovakia started against the EU contesting the quota scheme for asylum seekers’ resettlement], Hungary and Slovakia are likely to lose, even though this is only possible if the court ignores the obvious state of legal affairs”, Kövér said.
