2024 Olympics: Hamburg vs Budapest

According to nol.hu, fans of Hamburg Olympics celebrated their victory over Berlin in that hall, where in 2024 (or in 2028), the handball Olympic Games would be organized. Budapest also signed for the organization of the 2024 Olympics, so Hamburg will be one of the “opponents” of the Hungarian capital.

By the way, the German Olympic Committee was convinced not because of the number of sports facilities already suitable, but the commitment of local citizens. In contrast to Hungary, there were referendums in the applying cities, so the locals could decide whether they want Olympics or not.

For the organization, it was a serious loss of prestige, that Munich voters rejected the planned Winter Olympics. They felt that another failure is not acceptable at a mandatory referendum. While 55 percent of Berlin’s residents support the organization of the Games, according to a representative survey, this ratio is 64% in Hamburg.

According to nol.hu, Germany’s mayor promised Olympics without risks and side effects and he swears: they will not take loan. Hamburg would build the Games on the Elbe and a run-down industrial and port area would be involved in the city’s life.
