Foreign retail chains to vanish from the Hungarian food industry?!

The government commissioner, János Lázár, announced a protectionist policy in order to save and revive the Hungarian food industry. Besides supporting the Hungarian-owned manufacturing industry, the government’s plans include the displacement of multinational retail companies.
Within the framework of the online event of the Agricultural Sector Conference 2020 organised by the Portfolio Group, the government commissioner, János Lázár pointed out that
time has come to redesign the Hungarian countryside and agriculture.

According to the politician, as a result of the pandemic, the whole world has learned a lesson about the importance of independence. If borders have to be closed and goods and people cannot move freely, the significance and the ability of self-sufficiency increase. He also highlighted that
the government’s plans also include the displacement of foreign retail chains,
which requires an openly protectionist policy and an offensive approach, because the establishment of the Hungarian national retail is essential. “An important question in the current situation is whether EU funds can be blocked for political reasons. And the answer is no. These are not benefits, but allowances.” – said the politician, adding that he was not making his point for a Hungary outside the European Union.
The Fidesz politician stated that the countryside and agriculture are the two areas that did not win during the change of regime nor during the accession to the EU – reported by 24.hu. According to János Lázár, today Hungary is a vehicle country, because 50% of GDP comes from the automotive industry.

The foreign chains that are here in Hungary are pale imitations of their stores in the West. They have a much more limited product range and do not stock the better quality items. Their buyers don’t seem to realise that many Hungarians have travelled abroad and become used to cuisine other than Hungarian or that tastes have changed from what our old grandparents used to cook and eat. Nevertheless, they are better than nothing. I suspect that if their investment in Hungary is discouraged and they leave, consumer choice will be further limited. It seems a very backward step to me. In any case, protectionist policies would be in breach of EU rules; the government cannot welcome German car industry investment on the one hand and push out German retailers on the other, for instance.
Going back to pre economic growth perriod?Can Hungary really afford to become isolated la la land in this times?I think NO.
It is about time. This could be the first step of leaving the EU and that is not a bad idea. No one needs foreign dictatorship.
Stop crying, you had ten years to modernize the agricultural sector and did nothing and you spent in on stadiums. But more than that, this is again a victim mentality. If he misses Hungarian retail chains, he can quit his job and open one and expand it, there is nothing that prevents it (problem solved). But also, what he says is simply self-defeating as Hungary exports more of its agricultural that it consumes. If everyone protected its markets, Hungary would suffer the most. Now honestly, could you think of shopping in CBA or Coop stores? I am happy with the Spar, Lidl and Aldi (Tesco and Auchan I avoid as the shopping experience there is poor). What we need in Hungary is a higher level supermarket like Waitrose in UK or Rewe in Germany.
