Fewer tuberculosis cases reported in Hungary

Budapest (MTI) – The number of patients suffering from tuberculosis (TB) has dropped gradually over the past five years, the human resources ministry said on Tuesday, marking International TB Day.

In 2014, the number of TB patients was fewer than 100 in one million, with an over 10 percent decline registered in new cases. The corresponding ratio across the EU is an average five percent, the ministry said.

The significant drop can be attributed to close cooperation between health management, the relevant authorities, health-care institutions and civil organisations, it said.

“It is a realistic goal for Hungary to eliminate the disease almost entirely, namely reducing new cases to 10 per one million inhabitants, by 2035 as envisaged by the World Health Organisation,” the ministry said.
