Country Assembly Movement: Protest camp is over at Kossuth square

The Country Assembly Movement (OGYM) must remove all items of its encampment from the centre of Kossuth square by the end of April after the court, besides the police, has had enough of the OGYM making an improper use of the right of assembly, origo.hu reports.

According to origo.hu, the encampment was set up on 8 August last year by the members of the Country Assembly Movement as a protest against governmental measures.

So far, the OGYM has successfully defied the police, according to which the event taking place habitually oversteps the limit of the freedom of expression, and it cannot be classified to the possibility provided by the law on the right of assembly.

The origo.hu said, OGYM most recently had made a claim for occupying the square during the period from 1 May to 30 June which was again rejected by the police. The Budapest Police (BRFK) argued that only those events fall within the scope of the right of assembly that are organised with the purpose of the expression of any public opinion in a manner, and within a reasonable period, which is suitable for achieving the desired goal, and not the permanent and habitual occupations of the public spaces.
