Budapest transport developments expected to boost metro 4 passenger numbers

Budapest, July 30 (MTI) – The government hopes to boost passenger numbers in Budapest’s metro 4 line with the help of transport developments carried out in conjunction with the metropolitan city council, the deputy state secretary for transport said on Thursday.

Zsolt Becsey said the city’s 4th metro line started operating in the spring of 2014 with around daily 100,000 passengers and this increased to 160,000 by the end of the year.

He said that thanks to metro 4, the time of travel in Budapest’s public transport network has decreased by 10 minutes.

Among the planned transport developments connected to metro 4, he cited turning the last stop in Kelenfold, which is also a train station, into an intermodal hub. This will involve building a new junction for the M1 and M7 motorways here and improved access to the station. A bus terminal is also being built in Kelenfold and the number of parking places will be increased to 1,500. Becsey said the entire development project will be completed by the end of 2016.
