Bakelit Multi Art Center – An innovative spaces for contemporary dance

Bakelit Multi Art Center is one of the most innovative spaces for contemporary dance and theater in Budapest. Beside that, it’s based in Pest’s industrial area, where we have a lot of space in an old fabric hall to go creative.

With an exciting, changing program, the cultural center offers a place of free development for artists and new experiences for the visitors.

In addition to Hungarian pieces, international artists are also frequent guests.
As part of various EU programs, Bakelit cooperates with a number of European institutions, bringing the latest trends in contemporary dance and theater, as well as video and lighting installations to Budapest.

Like a chant or the omen of a silence, the line of a quiet light arises in this movement from hands, from faces and arms that are the liturgy of lifted flight of a celebration: the world is now summarized in this space, in this sphere where bodies are the intimate praying of air, the quiet closing of breathing in which life stops and another one reborn, higher, freer and purer.

The Spanish company OtraDanza exists as a ‘shared peephole’, intended to show their enthusiasm for the body as a primary alphabet in creation, their eagerness for transmitting ideas and concepts through an ethereal and volatile outline with dance as the core.

Within the frame of the Creative Europe project, Be SpectACTive!, Bakelit welcomes the British company Displace Yourself. They will discover the culture of food here in Budapest and around the capital during their two-week residency. The artists will visit various markets and restaurants, interview farmers, families and youngsters, travel to countryside, and obviously eat a lot, while making a physical dance show out if their fresh experiences. Their residency ends up with a work in progress presentation in Bakelit Multi Art Center on the 30th of May.

“電気神楽 (Elektro Kagura)” is the name of the latest collaborative project of Ichi Go (JP), AXL OTL (FR) and Yukihiro Ikutani (JP), who met in Berlin, Germany. 神楽(Kagura) is a traditional dance performed during shinto rituals. The three artists recreate in live the Japanese pantheon in a cross media performance, bringing together modern dance, computer music and digital painting.
