A summer walk with wine – Exploring Eger glass in hand

Change language:

Let’s celebrate the first day of summer in Eger on June 1 with the wines of 10 wineries of the Egri Borműhely complemented by culinary treats and an exciting walking tour. Visitors can explore the historical town in a way never experienced before: with glass in hand!

City tour with wine

Kata Koklács and Veronika Gál have long been organizing and conducting walking tours covering Eger and its surroundings. These tours provide a unique opportunity to explore the sights while sipping local wines. Both Kata and Veronika were born and raised in Eger, their lives are inseparably linked to its vineyards and wines and their affection for their hometown is second to none. The tours cover various routes with numerous stops to sample wines, grab a few bites at restaurants, all the while listening to the guides’ exciting stories revealing the town’s intriguing history.

Extra edition

What makes this season starting tasting tour special is that never before have so many wineries joined the event. Participants can meet the winemakers and sample the wines of ten Eger Wine Workshop wineries.

At Gál Tibor Fúzió following the welcome drink guests are given a cellar tour, then they walk on to visit the Archbishop’s Palace and enjoy its rich cultural offerings. At the Senator-House and at Brumbrum Buffet the emphasis shifts to gastronomy. After some rest at Petrény Wine Bank, the route continues to the Square of Végvári vitézek to pay a visit to the Thummerer Wine Shop. At Eszterházy Károly University the winemaker gives a guided tour of the building and the final stop is at János Bolyki whose cellar participants will reach by shuttle service.

The final stop is by no means the end of fun, far from it. The tour coincides with the Feszt!Eger festival held at Bolyki-valley which provides a wonderful and unique scenery. Live concerts and wines await the lucky guests at this impressive disused quarry.

Bikavér and csillag

Guests can sample wines at all stops (ten wines altogether), and because bikavér and csillag are of special importance to the members of Egri Borműhely (Eger Wine Workshop) the lineup is made up of wines belonging to these two categories. From light and refreshing whites through more substantial single vineyard egri csillags to vibrant and serious bikavérs visitors can discover the many faces of the two wine types while enjoying the background stories of the specific wines told by the winemakers.
