The towns around Budapest offer a great many sights and programmes for trips or holidays, nlcafe.hu writes. Leave the city for a day, and check out one of these beautiful places, all within an hour’s drive from Budapest. You can visit them all in one day for an eventful excursion or take them one by one in three relaxing trips around the capital.

  1. Gödöllő Palace

The Grassalkovich palace in Gödöllő is a must-see. The 18th century Baroque palace was very popular with the royal family; Empress Elisabeth of Austria, better known as Sisi, used it as her country residence after she was crowned Queen of Hungary in 1867. The palace also served as the military residence of Windisch-Grätz in 1848, residence of Regent Miklós Horthy between the two world wars, and as an old people’s home after the Second World War.

Renovation of the palace began in the ‘90s with the aim of restoring the palace to its 1880s state as it had been during Empress Elisabeth’s time there. Today, the palace is open to visitors and works as a museum and an exhibition.
