Ukraine will “do whatever it takes” to influence Hungary’s upcoming election, FM Szijjártó says

Ukraine will “do whatever it takes” to influence Hungary’s upcoming election, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in Kecskemét, in central Hungary, on Tuesday, arguing that the April 12 vote would be a pivotal national issue for both countries.

Speaking at a business forum, Szijjártó said a victory by ruling Fidesz would prevent Hungary from being dragged into the war in Ukraine and it would block European Union funds from being diverted to the country, while keeping Kyiv out of the EU.

He argued that admitting Ukraine into the EU would instantly devastate Hungarian agriculture, strip cohesion funds and risk making Hungary a gateway for the Ukrainian mafia.

He suggested Ukraine’s leadership was desperate to avoid another four years of a Fidesz government, which, he noted, had consistently opposed their interests.

“[Ukrainian President] Volodymyr Zelensky’s threat to send troops to ‘chat’ with Viktor Orbán … the oil blockade pushing petrol prices to 1,000 forints a litre are all attempts to interfere [in the election], Szijjártó said, arguing that “high fuel prices are rarely an advantage for incumbents.”

Szijjártó also demanded answers in connection with the “suspicious movement of hundreds of millions in cash” transiting through Hungary, linked to Ukrainian military and intelligence personnel. He said “the panic and the outrage” from Ukraine’s part were “telling”, adding that “something doesn’t add up.”

          • There is no moderation here, as evidenced by the widespread personal abuse, use of profanities and various extreme viewpoints being openly expressed here. It is what it is.

  1. The glaring cognitive dissonance between Fidesz’s omnipresent nem háború (“No War!”) propaganda regarding Ukraine and their supportive silence—or overt approval—of US and Israeli strikes on Iran exposes that their “pacifism” is purely performative and geographically selective.

While the Orbán government brands any European logistical support for Ukraine as “pro-war” mania that risks World War III, they apply a completely different set of physics to the Middle East.

Because Orbán views Benjamin Netanyahu as a key ideological ally in the “illiberal international,” Hungarian diplomacy has consistently blocked EU resolutions calling for immediate ceasefires or condemning Israeli military actions.

When the US or Israel strikes Iranian targets, the Fidesz communication machine suddenly abandons its fear-mongering about escalation; instead, they frame these actions as necessary counter-terrorism or legitimate self-defense, completely retiring the “Peace” slogan that is plastered across every billboard in Budapest.

This double standard clarifies that for Fidesz, “Peace” does not mean the absence of violence. In the context of Ukraine, “Peace” is a code word for Russian acquiescence and the cessation of Western influence. In the Middle East, however, war is permissible—and even quietly applauded—as long as it is being waged by their political friends against their designated enemies.

The rhetoric confirms that their “No War” stance isn’t a moral principle, but a domestic political bludgeon used to categorize the Hungarian opposition as dangerous, while reserving the right to support military aggression when it suits their geopolitical alliances.

  2. The policies of the Hungarian government could not be more consistent.

They practice Real-Politik, which means that they support their allies.

Everyone, except for AI, and The Leftists who generate it, understand that the Fidesz slogan, ‘No War’, means no further NATO Aggression in Western Russia, and, failing that, no Hungarian support for it.
