Russian troops capture “forcefully recruited” Hungarian citizen in Ukraine

Russia’s defence ministry reported capturing a soldier of dual Ukrainian-Hungarian citizenship on its Telegram channel on Wednesday.

The man, identified as Albert Roman, had lived in Hungary since 2020 but was detained by Ukraine’s authorities upon his return, and was taken to a recruitment centre in Uzhhorod (Ungvár). A medical examination at the centre found the man fit for service “despite having meningitis, several fractures and 11 concussions”, the statement said. According to the document, the man was then sent to a battalion “from where less than one percent of soldiers return”.

Roman surrendered to Russian troops in the Pokrovsk area on 19 February, the Russian ministry said according to the Hungarian News Agency.

The POW recounted that, wounded by shrapnel amid the rubble of a collapsed building, he pleaded to be evacuated; yet his own side did not even drop him a first-aid kit. Forced to drink his own urine, he received word over the radio from his commander that his position had been declared forfeit. According to an account also publicised by the RIA Novosti news agency, he surrendered without resistance to the Russian troops, who gave him water and food.

‘Expectation that Hungarian troops go to Ukraine stated for first time’, says Hungarian FM Szijjártó

  1. The Russians demonstrably leave their own wounded soldiers behind on the battlefield, are unable to provide them with adequate medical care, or send them wounded back to the front. Many Ukrainian prisoners are simply shot in a fit of rage (the International Criminal Court in The Hague is investigating this and has been gathering evidence for some time).

But they rescue a wounded Hungarian immediately. I simply don’t believe that the whole story unfolded only that way. As I’ve already said, the election campaign is getting dirtier and dirtier.

  2. The information is all coming from a Russian news agency as a propaganda piece trying to influence public opinion. As long as this guy is in Russian hands he is not going to contradict any narrative the Russians want him to agree to.
