Monty Python star John Cleese rebukes Orbán over Russia ties and 2026 elections

Change language:
John Cleese, the British comedian, actor, screenwriter and producer famed for Monty Python, has once again weighed in on Hungary’s political travails ahead of this year’s elections.
Cleese invokes Soviet invasion to chide Orbán
On the social media platform X, Cleese shared his preferred outcome for the Hungarian poll, Blikk wrote. He urged Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to remind voters that Russia invaded Hungary in 1956, with heavy loss of life. The remark responded to Orbán’s post insisting that Hungary could not be “blackmailed” by Ukraine. Kyiv has halted flows through the Druzhba (“Friendship”) pipeline, which carries Russian crude to Hungary (and Slovakia). In retaliation, Budapest threatens to veto a proposed €90 billion EU war loan for Ukraine.

Ukraine insists that Russian bombing damaged the pipeline; with vast swathes of the country deprived of electricity and heating by Moscow’s strikes, repairs will take time. Hungary’s government, by contrast, blames a political decision in Kyiv and vows to block the EU aid as a result.
PM Orbán: ‘Central Europe is far more complicated’
Orbán hit back at Cleese on X, assuring him that Hungarians “have not forgotten” 1956 and are working daily “to ensure that no one ever dares to attack Hungary again”. He added a barb: Central Europe, he quipped, is “far more complicated” than it appears from “the comfortable armchair of the Brit”.

Well it was Orban who removed the 1956 memorial from the front of Parliament so it is the height of hypocrisy for him to say that Hungarians have not forgotten about 1956. He has been working hard to make Hungarians forget 1956 and that topic is one of the last things he ever wants to talk about because he has been selling Hungary to the Russian enemy and works for them night and day.

‘Was it ‘Ukrainians’ in 1956?’
Why, of course, it was Russians, from The Ukrainian Region of Russia who were invading Budapest, in 1956, just as it was Russians from The Ukrainian Region of Russia who destroyed the European Invasion of Russia in 1812, under Napoleon, and, then again, in 1941-1945, under Hitler.
And yet : if I understand The EU correctly, Western Russia that they refer to as the Ukraine, onion Russian Orthodox domed-churches dotting every town, is an essential part of the very West that, until recently, refused to allow them into the EU or NATO.
Yes, we must defend Western Russians from Eastern Russians, in the Ukrainian Region, because if we do not protect Western Russians, who are not at all Russian, from The Eastern Russian, Berlin, Budapest, and Bruxelles are next to be poured into Uncle Vladimir’s thirsty samovar.
That is the reason, or so we are told.
While the history of Ukraine and Russia are closely intertwined, Ukrainians are ethnically, culturally and liguistically distinct from Russians. Clearly, intermarriage, a shared legacy of Orthodox Christianity, speaking a language that is similar, as well as Ukraine forming a constituent part of ‘Greater Russia’ (for want of a better expression) at times, most recently as a part of the Soviet Union leads to a proximate relationship (and I believe that most Ukrainians wish for a peaceful and friendly relationship with Russia), they are not in fact the same people. I was actually shocked when I heard spoken Ukrainian expecting it to sound very similar to Russian and, in fact, it sounded like a completely different language. Clearly much of this is due to pronunciation rather than using entirely different words or grammatical structure. The closest parallel I can find is that between Scotland and England. Yes, presently part of the same country, speaking English (or a variation thereof), bordering one another and with many many similarities while also apart, with a distinct identity that extends far beyond mere self identification. It would be reasonable for them to form a union and be part of the same country, also it’s entirely reasonable and logical to remain idependent of one another.
No one in their right mind wants to be part of Russia is why everyone wants to join NATO with Sweden and Finland being the latest additions despite Orban’s obstruction on behalf of Russia.
Apparently a lot of people living in the lands called The Ukraine, Dear Larry, did not want to be a part of our part of the world, and 20,000,000+ of them abandoned the country in the first year of the war.
If we doubted this early referendum on being awarded the privilege to fight and die for The Western Elite, we see that the 18-24 year old Ukrainians, when faced with being conscripted recently, skedaddled, as well.
Maybe it is closer to the truth to say that some in The Ukraine, do not wish to be a part of the Russian world, while others do.
That said, I bet the majority of Ukrainians do not give, nor ever have given, a flying damn – so long as they are left alone to work, live, and shop.
Please ask Putin to leave Ukrainians alone to work, live and shop.
Thank you for your excellent and very thoughtful reply, Dear Steve.
Let us proceed along your lines : that, though the Slavs living in the Russic Region we regard as The Modern Ukraine (Far Western Ukraine excluded – because it is not Russic) have a lot in common, it is reasonable for them to desire to be separate from their brothers.
This, in and of itself, is not near the problem that it becomes when The Western Elite get involved and try to weaponize The Ukraine, and it’s populace against the brothers living just a bit to The East.
My sources, from that part of the world, have told me that efforts to weaponize The Ukraine against Russia began almost the very first moment that the Soviet Union fell apart – over 35 years ago.
That this whole affair went so far is complex, but, I will attribute is to two main things : #1. Russia was anemic in the 1990s, and B. 2000-2020, V. Putin was worried that, if he fully challenged The Western Elite over the control of The Ukraine, and their weaponization of the Ukraine against Russia, Russia would not fare well.
If these two conditions had not existed, Russia would have done something a long time ago, about this situation, for they are completely uncomfortable with it – not just V. Putin, but B. Yeltsin, and M. Gorbachev, and many tens of millions of Russian citizens.
So, we come back to the visible reality – The Ukraine is not a sovereign country, but, is owned and run by The Western Elite, using pinched taxpayer moneys from my country and other Western Countries.
Russia does not accept this, will never accept this, and, now that they have been whipping NATO’s ass in the Ukraine, for at least the last year, and that whipping is getting worse, they are going to be the ones who decide this matter.
At this point, you have to ask yourself a question : in consideration of the fact that The Western Elite had bloodlessly conquered almost all of Eastern Europe and The Ukraine, by 2007, you have to wonder why they could not just find a way to get along with their new neighbours – Russia, in a way that put the Russians at ease.
They, The Western Elite, could not, however, but, instead, armed and prepared The Ukraine for a war with Russia.
The provocations with which The Western Elite plied Russia, using The Ukraine, comprise an endlessly long list.
To cut to the chase, The Western Elite have the war they wanted, and, after the most massive attempt history has ever beheld, of using hard and soft power to destroy Russia in 2022, they, The Western Elite, have glaringly failed and lost.
That Russia is not rolling towards Warsaw, Bucharest, and Budapest, is, because A. They do not want it. B. As Larry stated – V. Putin wants this war to go on.
Why does V. Putin want this war to go on?
He is using this regime change on him to regime change the his would-be regime changers.
And, with the passage of every month, this looks like what is becoming reality.
Macron, Merz, and Starmer will not survive, and, if the Western Elite Establishment persists in replacing them with the same, they, too, will not be faring well.
Be well, Dear Steven!
If you want to curse Mouton’s mother, speak about Russia or Putin!
No way he is a stupid AI bot 😂😂😂😂
I have a question for the actor John Cleese. Isn’t your country the UK? Why don’t you worry about fixing the mess in UK and mind your own business about Hungarian Politics. You are a washed up actor from a washed up country 1 step away from becoming a glowing radioactive ashpile where the UK once sat.
Crybaby Larry who has never been to Hungary needs a need hobby. GROW UP!
If Orban and you are allowed to do that in Ukraine, why shouldn’t John be allowed to do it in Hungary? Do you consider Hungary a promised land that therefore cannot be criticized? You are really a master of double standards.
Nobody cares about Ukraine or the Ukrainian people! On the contrary. Ukraine is nothing but the pawn in a (once again) chess game of a planned resurgence of the West’s war against Russia.
And when it comes to this topic, I would least of all listen to English sources or puppets.

When peace talks between Ukraine and Russia were held right after the outbreak of war in 2022 and were on their way to a conclusion, it was B.Johnson who hurriedly traveled to Kiev…. Ukrainians can now only be advised to leave their homeland, because this country is in danger of being completely wiped out.
The West erroneously acts as if communism still prevails in Russia as it did before 1991 or during the last world war! It is Orban and Fico and perhaps very few others who do not believe such hackneyed rotten fairy tales.
After the level of discourse here initially improved slightly due to Mark’s permanent or temporary departure, it now appears that some “real men,” to use Mouton’s words, are deliberately aiming for new lows.
Cheap propaganda and false claims, relying solely on pro-government Russian sources, cannot replace facts, no matter how constantly repeated. Nor does it make them true. They merely lull independent readers to sleep and create a mantra-like sense of belonging among like-minded individuals, but they cannot convince those with differing opinions, despite constant repetition.
However, the posts do reveal one thing, despite the author’s completely different intention: Larry is capable of empathy. Something that some others here utterly lack. Their entire worldview is reduced to an unbridled hatred of everything that differs from themselves.
I know that one cannot build trusting cooperation on hatred. This is where the flaw in the system lies: ultimately, when these perceived enemies prove less effective, these people end up at each other’s throats, tearing each other apart.
What’s the logic behind Larry not living in Hungary? Does it imply that only people living in Hungary are competent or allowed to comment? There’s no rational explanation; it’s simply about defaming and denigrating someone. I suggest the author try this in Russia; he’d surely be celebrated there if he presented Russian positions as the truth. He could gain some entirely new perspectives there, though whether he’d survive remains an unanswered question.
