Hungary blocks EU sanctions package over halted Ukrainian oil deliveries
Hungary will block the adoption of the European Union’s 20th sanctions package until Ukraine resumes crude oil deliveries to the country, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced following a meeting of the Energy Security Council in Budapest.
According to the minister, Ukraine decided this week not to restart oil shipments towards Hungary, a move he described as “clear political blackmail”.
Budapest ties support for new sanctions to energy security
Szijjártó argued that the suspension was aimed at creating both fuel shortages and sharply higher prices in Hungary ahead of parliamentary elections. He claimed Kyiv hoped to push for a more Ukraine-friendly government in Budapest.
“We made it clear that as long as oil deliveries are not resumed, we will block decisions that are important for Ukraine,” he said.
As a result, Hungary plans to veto the sanctions package at the upcoming meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
Government releases reserves and halts diesel exports
To avoid supply disruptions, the government has released part of Hungary’s strategic oil reserves and begun sourcing replacement shipments by sea, which are already on their way.

Iranian representatives in December signed a secret agreement in Moscow with the Russian side on the purchase of portable anti-aircraft missile systems “Verba” for about €500 million, according to Financial Times citing leaked Russian documents and sources familiar with the details of the deal.
According to the contract, Russian state company Rosoboronexport is to supply Iran with 500 Verba MANPAD launchers and 2,500 9M336 missiles between 2027 and 2029. The documents specify the cost of one missile at €170,000 and a launcher at €40,000. The total value of the contract is €495 million.
“Verba” is a portable anti-aircraft missile system of the latest generation. It is equipped with a 9M336 missile with a three-spectral infrared homing head, which increases resistance to heat traps and interference. The complex is designed to engage low-flying targets – airplanes, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones. It is launched from a portable unit that can be carried on the shoulder, and can be used by mobile units without deploying fixed radar facilities.
The United States is ready to hold another round of talks with Iran if Tehran submits a detailed proposal within 48 hours. This is reported by Axios yesterday.
