Hungary could see its first thunderstorm of the year soon!

The first thunderstorm of the year could develop in Hungary early next week, according to HungaroMet Zrt., which shared the forecast on its Facebook page on Sunday.
Unusually late start to thunderstorm season
So far, no thunderstorms have been recorded within Hungary’s borders this year, which is unusual compared with the past 15 years. HungaroMet Zrt. noted that since 2010, there were 12 years when the skies rumbled before 20 January. By contrast, in 2011, the first storm occurred only on 14 March, and in 2014, not until 28 February.
Monday and Tuesday bring conditions for storms
According to current forecasts, conditions could be favourable for thunderstorms on both Monday and Tuesday. A cold front will move in on Monday, and high-altitude airflows over the Carpathian Basin will create an unstable air mass. This could trigger scattered showers, particularly in the North Transdanubia region, and possibly along the northern border.
On Tuesday, sporadic showers—including rain, snow-rain showers, or snow showers in the mountains—are expected, and isolated thunderstorms may form in the north-eastern and eastern counties.
Possible strong gusts in isolated areas
Meteorologists warned that some locations could experience wind gusts slightly exceeding 60 km/h, posing a risk for brief, intense conditions.
