Budapest’s biggest Christmas markets are now open: here’s what to expect and how much you’ll pay

Budapest has officially stepped into the festive season. On Friday afternoon, the 15th Advent Basilica and the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas – the capital’s two largest Christmas markets – opened their gates. The organisers aim once again to combine the classic Advent atmosphere with more affordable prices and eye-catching new features, and the city centre has already filled with curious visitors.

New light projections and spectacular installations at the Basilica

As every year, St Stephen’s Square serves as one of the focal points of the city’s festive programme. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Advent Basilica, the organisers have introduced a fully renewed light projection: a new 3D animation presenting the 120-year history of the Basilica is shown every day from 5.30 pm, running every half hour, SzeretlekMagyarország reports.

The square now features a new welcome gate, a light tunnel and a starry-sky-style light canopy. Visitors can also enjoy new selfie spots and a multilingual selfie booth. This year marks the debut of an online food-ordering system, allowing guests to scan a QR code for quicker pick-up. Of course, it remains possible to order in person and pay in cash or by card.

Interactive light show and AI-powered LED wall on Vörösmarty Square

The centrepiece of the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas is once again the iconic transparent “snow globe” that protects the Vörösmarty statue. For the first time, an interactive light show is displayed inside it.

The entire square has been fitted with new festive lighting, with special light installations wrapped around the trees. Among the most exciting innovations is a motion-sensing LED wall displaying AI-generated animations that react to visitors’ movements.

Children can once again enjoy the free mini train, now featuring a new stop named “Vörösmarty tér”.
