Finally: Budapest’s iconic Citadella set to reopen to the public soon!

Next spring, Budapest’s historic Citadella will open its doors to visitors with a stunning transformation that combines history, modern design, and community space. The iconic fortress, which has stood over the city for more than 150 years, is entering a new chapter as it becomes an open, accessible, and vibrant public destination.

Citadella reimagined

Once a largely closed-off structure with a single entrance, the Citadella has now been reimagined with three access points. Spectacular new staircases and openings cut into the fortress walls make the site far more inviting and easier to explore. Newly designed terraces offer breathtaking panoramic views over the Hungarian capital, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the city’s skyline.

Inside the fortress, a 6,000-square-metre central park is being created with sustainability and ecological preservation at its heart. The surrounding green space will expand to 20,000 square metres—one and a half times its previous size—and will feature rare and unique plant species.

History intertwined with modern technologies

While preserving the site’s historic legacy, the redevelopment integrates cutting-edge 21st-century technologies. The western gun tower will host the “Bastion of Freedom,” a 1,700-square-metre, multi-level exhibition celebrating Hungary’s struggles for liberty. Innovative architectural touches, including a glass pedestrian bridge, an artificial water feature in the inner courtyard, and an eternal flame, will enhance the visitor experience.
