Terrifying: This is what remained of a once well-known vineyard in Eger

On the outskirts of Eger, nestled against the slopes of Kis-Eged, lies the eerie ruin of what was once a flourishing vineyard and a site of scientific significance.
From vineyard to a terrifying experience
Known as Csomós Tanya, the former estate now stands abandoned, overgrown, and filled with unsettling remnants of both history and imagination.
Years ago, the Urbex Hungary team, known for exploring forgotten places, ventured into the crumbling remains of this once-important winery in Eger, writes heol.hu.
Hidden among cracked walls and silent halls, they found more than just decay — they uncovered a haunting atmosphere and strange, disturbing artwork left behind by previous visitors.
Csomós Tanya began its story in the early 20th century, when Ferenc Legányi and his family acquired the estate. Legányi, born in Budapest but raised in Eger, introduced innovative farming methods, creating terraces and planting vineyards and orchards.
During extensive earthworks, he discovered 40-million-year-old fossilised fish and leaves, sparking his passion for palaeontology. His growing collection attracted the attention of Hungary’s top geologists and transformed the site into a hub of scientific exchange.
Today, little remains of that golden age of the Eger-based winery. The estate was eventually auctioned off, the vineyards withered, and the buildings fell into disrepair. Vandals and time have stripped the site of its former grandeur.
