Budapest’s iconic Gellért Thermal Bath to close for years: here’s why

The historic Gellért Thermal Bath in Budapest is slated for a comprehensive renovation starting in October 2025, necessitating a temporary closure of approximately three years. This extensive project, estimated to cost around HUF 20 billion (EUR 50 million), aims to revitalise both the interior and exterior of the century-old establishment.
The decision to commence the refurbishment follows an expert assessment deeming the condition of the bath’s machinery house as hazardous, Világgazdaság writes based on TermálOnline. This evaluation highlighted that essential structural reinforcements are imperative before any adjacent hotel renovation activities can proceed. The machinery house’s current state poses significant safety concerns, making the renovation unavoidable.
In preparation for this undertaking, the Budapest Municipal Assembly has approved plans for land acquisitions and exchanges to facilitate the separation of the bath from the adjoining hotel. This move aims to address the intertwined mechanical systems and service areas shared by the two establishments. The council’s endorsement marks a pivotal step toward preserving the architectural integrity and operational functionality of the Gellért Thermal Bath.
