Police officers’ dramatic Danube River rescue of suicidal woman captured on video

Hungarian police reported on an incident that happened on Friday when a 21-year-old suicidal woman tried to jump off Budapest’s Margaret Bridge into the Danube.

The 21-year-old woman had climbed over the railing of the Margaret Bridge and appeared to have done so with suicidal intent. District II patrol officers were the first to arrive on the scene. Without much thought, Sergeant Sándor Kovács climbed over the railing and tried to talk some sense into the desperate girl.

As soon as I saw the girl on the edge of the bridge pillar, I immediately climbed over to her, as it seemed that she could fall at any moment. I crouched down and tried to calm her down, talk to her and make her feel that we wanted to help. I tried to buy time until reinforcements arrived, as we would not have been able to hold her safely at that point. Any movement would have been life-threatening, and there were only rocks below us. Fortunately, the girl reacted and pulled herself up a little higher, the police officer said on the BRFK Facebook page.
