Minister Lázár: Austria has an occupation plan at Lake Fertő

Construction and Transportation Minister János Lázár outlined infrastructure investments worth billions of forints at a press conference in Sopron (W Hungary) on Tuesday, after talks with city leaders.

Lázár noted that the last stretch of the M85 expressway, connecting Sopron with Győr, to the east, had been inaugurated in December. He said around EUR 15m (HUF 6bn) would be spent on repaving state-owned roads within the city limits in the coming year. He added that the city council would spend a further EUR 5m (HUF 1.9bn) of its own funds on road upgrades.

Lázár said the government wanted to raise the length of tracks managed by regional railway company GYSEV, Sopron’s biggest employer and taxpayer, from 450km to 1,200km. The sides will weigh the transformation of a 30-hectare local council-owned industrial park next to GYSEV Cargo into a logistics base managing transshipment between East and West, he added.

“We respect and want to preserve nature, but we also want Hungarian voters to enjoy the same services as those on the Austrian side of Lake Fertő,” he said. The Minister of Construction and Transport hopes that there is enough understanding in the green radical organisations that the people of Sopron also want to have access to the water, and that what is free in Austria is also free in Hungary. Moreover, better and higher quality things should be created at home.
