Warning: Major renovation begins on busy flyover in Budapest

The long-anticipated renovation of the Flórián Square flyovers in Budapest is set to begin, with the first phase starting on 1 March 2025, as the southern bridge will be closed to traffic. According to the Budapest Transport Center (BKK), this extensive project, necessary due to the deteriorated condition of the overpasses, will last until spring 2026.

Why renovation is crucial

Built over 40 years ago, the Flórián Square overpasses have suffered significant damage due to exposure to moisture and pollution, BKK wrote in its statement. Cracks in the structure and rusting steel reinforcements have weakened the concrete, especially around the pillars, raising safety concerns. The last major renovation took place two decades ago, but a comprehensive reconstruction has now become unavoidable.

Phased construction plan

The renovation will be conducted in two phases to minimise traffic disruptions:

1. Phase one: Starting 1 March, the southern bridge, currently used for traffic heading toward Pest, will be closed. Traffic will be redirected to the northern bridge, which will temporarily operate as a two-way road with one lane in each direction.
2. Phase two: In the autumn of 2025, the northern bridge will be closed, and the newly renovated southern bridge will reopen for traffic heading toward Pest.

During the project, a new two-lane turnaround will be established on Pacsirtamező Street to assist drivers coming from Szentendrei Road.
