Budapest faces record high rat infestations

Change language:
Budapest is currently grappling with an unprecedented surge in rat infestations, reaching record-breaking numbers that have alarmed both residents and authorities.
The scale of the rat infestations
According to Szegedma, recent data from the Municipality of Budapest reveals a disturbing trend, with the presence of rats doubling by the end of the summer and surpassing 1,187 reports in October alone—a staggering figure, more than double the previous year’s statistics. Rats, thriving in colonies, have found a favourable habitat in Budapest’s basements and sewers. While exact numbers are challenging to determine, experts estimate that the nearly 7,000 rat reports in the past six months may represent tens of thousands of these pests. Alarming predictions suggest an invasion of up to 100,000 rats by spring, if the situation remains unchanged. This could pose a severe threat to public health and safety.
Kindergartens evacuated, more cases expected
Recent events highlight the severity of the situation. For instance, rat infestations led to the evacuation of two kindergartens in Zugló. Addressing the issue requires taking prompt and effective measures. If not, such cases may become increasingly common in the coming year. It could be a direct threat to the well-being of residents, especially vulnerable populations like children.
