Zrínyi Castle in Szigetvár has been inaugurated after renovation

On Friday, the renewed Zrínyi Castle in Szigetvár was inaugurated. The building has seen more than HUF 2 billion (EUR 5.3 million) worth of tourism improvements over the past three years, MTI reports. The castle is famous for the heroic stand of Miklós Zrínyi and his fellow martyrs against the Turks in 1566.

The building was renovated as part of the National Castle Programme (Nemzeti Kastély- és Várprogram). This project involves the development of 18 castles and 12 fortresses nationwide. As for this particular development, it was funded by the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme with HUF 2.063 billion.

What’s new?

As part of the developments carried out on one of the most significant monuments in South Transdanubia, which has been a National Monument since 2016 and this year also received the Monument of the Year award, the castle garden and the castle wall walkway were expanded with new attractions that can be visited all year round, 24.hu reports.

Furthermore, the castle garden was renewed, a special interactive exhibition was built, and new museum functions were installed in the previously unused casemate building.

At the event, Péter Vass, Mayor of Szigetvár, said that four different projects have been linked to the development of the castle over the past ten years: first a visitor centre was built, then the walkways, street furniture, the lake and casemates next to the castle were renewed. Finally, a new exhibition space, catering facilities and a conference room were created.

Even more development is expected in the area

He added that the further development of tourism in the city and the region will be served by the future development of the local spa, the construction of a four-star hotel and the extension of the M60 motorway, which will also improve the accessibility of the settlement.
