Tragedy: First Hungarian child to receive a heart from abroad dies aged 19

Eight-year-old Fanni was the first child in Hungary to receive a new heart from abroad in 2012. She died at the age of 19,  just the day before her mother’s birthday.

Fanni was born with myocarditis. She was eight years old when her condition began to deteriorate rapidly, Index reports. At that point, even the drugs to support her circulation were no longer helping. She was put on the national transplant list on Tuesday, on the list of the international organ exchange organisation Eurotransplant on Thursday and the family received the notification on Monday.

She was the first child in the country to receive a new organ from abroad.

For 11 years, Fanni lived a normal life, studying to be a confectioner because she loved baking. She promised her mother that she would make her own cake for her birthday. Unfortunately, she never did.

“Dear friends and acquaintances! I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that Fanni Ambarus is once again facing a difficult and trying battle. After 11 years, her new heart is tired and seems to have no more strength to work. She is currently stable but needs an internal circulatory support device. All I ask for is a prayer for her recovery! We know she is a hero and can do this,” her mother wrote on Facebook about two weeks ago.
