No longer fighting with Brussels? Hungary signs up to huge EU COVID recovery fund

Change language:

Hungary on Wednesday approved a bill essential to the European Union’s massive recovery fund, bringing the bloc a step closer to putting the deal into operation and hopefully ending Europe’s coronavirus-induced slump.

The 27 EU nations made an unprecedented agreement last year to jointly borrow 750 billion euros ($918 billion) for the fund. But

all 27 must ratify a decision to raise the upper limit for national contributions for the plan to go ahead.

Until Wednesday, Hungary was one of a handful yet to do so. The legislation was passed in parliament with 170 votes in favour and 29 lawmakers not taking part.

Nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has been in power for over a decade, has often been at loggerheads with Brussels over curbs on independent media, academics, courts and NGOs, as well as his restrictive approach to migration.

However, tens of billions of euros worth of funds flowing from the EU into Hungary have

helped his government boost GDP growth and will continue to be crucial as the economy rebounds from last year’s recession.

  1. As usual in Orbánistan, poecunia non olet. “Brussels” is evil every day except when its money reaches the stretching hands of Victorinus the Beggar.

  2. “Mario” is like a parrot with severe diarrhoea : “Orbanistan, Orbanistan, Orbanistan….SCREECH…crap !”

What this ignorant Neanderthal refuses to acknowledge is that Hungary receives only a very small ‘grant’ compared to other (far more ‘corrupt’) E.U. nations – such as Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, etc.

Thank goodness Hungary has REFUSED to obtain any ‘loans’ through the E.U. – one can only but imagine the multitude of ‘left-wing strings’ that would be ‘attached’ !

  3. I agree with Alfred, btw great insults, it really magnifies your high intellect, and helped you win the argument.
You never know what ‘left-wing strings’ may come with EU loans and the corrupt Brussels, best is to take money from Russia and China, they only want to help the People’s Republic of Hungary and their beloved dic-tator: supreme leader Orbinator.
But, please mind your warding because “compared to other (far more ‘corrupt’) E.U. nations” implies that this country and its government are also corrupt, which is not true !
