Will the 2020 Tokyo Olympics be postponed again?

Tokyo’s Olympics chief said on Friday that Japan was committed to holding a safe Games this summer, as a surge in COVID-19 cases prompted an expansion of contagion controls and with fresh calls for the Games to again be postponed or cancelled.
The government expanded quasi-emergency measures to 10 regions as a fourth wave of infections spread, casting more doubt on whether the Olympics can be held in Tokyo in fewer than 100 days.
“We’re not thinking of cancelling the Olympics,”
Tokyo 2020 President Seiko Hashimoto said, speaking on behalf of the organising committee.
“We will continue to do what we can to implement a thorough safety regimen that will make people feel complete safety.” The government added Aichi, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba to six other prefectures already under contagion controls, including the cities of Tokyo and Osaka.
Japan’s top health experts have acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic has entered a fourth wave.
Daily cases in Osaka reached a record 1,209 on Friday, driven by a virulent strain of the virus first identified in Britain. New infections in Tokyo were 729 on Thursday, the most since early February when most of the nation was under a state of emergency.
Almost two-thirds of Japanese said the Olympics should be cancelled or postponed,
a Jiji news poll showed on Friday. A senior ruling party official said on Thursday that cancelling this year’s Olympics remains an option if the coronavirus situation becomes too dire. A scaled-back torch relay is already underway. Olympic organisers said on Friday that on the main island of Okinawa in Japan’s southernmost Okinawa prefecture they would stage the relay in restricted areas without spectators instead of on public roads.
Overseas fans have been barred from the Games and officials say that domestic fans may be kept out too.
Underscoring the difficulties of planning during the pandemic, Tokyo Olympic organisers postponed another test event, the BMX freestyle cycling scheduled for April 24-25, because of the impact on scheduling from the COVID-19 situation.
The International Olympic Committee must – for once in its 127 year existence – face reality.
To even contemplate holding the Olympic Games in under 100 days within a country where less than 1% of the (local) population have received their first COVID-19 vaccination [compare that with Hungary where over one-third of its citizens have ALREADY had the first ‘jab’ and close to 15% are fully vaccinated] is SHEER AND UTTER MADNESS !
In accordance with the I.O.C.’s “suggestions”, there will be NO spectators, NO families, NO Olympic ‘atmosphere’ !
An Olympic Games without those features is like a Big Mac without the special sauce OR Coca-Cola with no bubbles OR a Visa card with no credit facilities ….and the list goes on.
Won’t such T.O.P. sponsors be really ‘pissed off’ to have spent so much money on ‘advertising rights’, yet alone the broadcasters (radio / television / internet) who will also feel CONNED (big time !) ?
Get real, John Coates (who for those unaware of I.O.C. politics is the [Australian] Olympic Vice-President in charge of organising the Tokyo Olympic Games) it’s about time to admit your underlying motives for insisting that the Tokyo 2020 (oops, 2021) Olympics proceed – regardless of the cost in human lives and major COVID-related sickness.
You desperately want the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to proceed in 2021 so that Brisbane can hold such an event in 2032 – instead of enabling many other interested countries (including Hungary) to compete for that chance on a LEVEL playing field (as you I.O.C. hypocrites are so fond of saying).
Show some ‘Olympic spirit’, Mr. Coates, and enable the 2020 Olympics to be POSTPONED – until at least 2028 (when with a bit of Olympic friendship the U.S.A. can be persuaded to stage its Olympics in 2032 – 100 years after the 1932 Games – a similar situation to Paris holding its Olympics in 2024, a century after the 1924 Games).
Then the I.O.C. can ‘preside’ over a PROPER Olympic City Bid Process for the 2036 Olympic Games.
We all know that you are a conniving, sneaky, underhand lawyer but FOR ONCE do the right thing !
Otherwise Shakespeare’s words in ‘Henry VI’ will again prove insightful : “The first thing we do, Let’s kill all the lawyers.”
And guess who will be at the top of many people’s list …….
