Stricter Hungarian police control during the long weekend on motorways

Hungarian authorities confirmed that during the long weekend from August 20 to August 23, stricter restrictions and unexpected identity checks will be undertaken on the motorways of Hungary. Police officers would like to avoid overspeeding, drunken driving, and they want to check the use of the motorways’ hard shoulders.

Napi reported that officers “conquered” the motorways of Hungary from Wednesday (August 19, 2 pm) in the suburbs of Budapest, Fejér, Pest and Veszprém Counties to check drivers. The fine for breaking traffic rules and regulations can be 300 EUR – the chief police officer told news services. The primary duty of the authorities is to check the hard shoulders of motorways as many drivers try to avoid traffic congestions by driving on these parts of motorways; once they are caught fine is inevitable. 

Driving on the hard shoulder of motorways is only allowed in a case of emergency when the driver needs to stop and get help. Using this part of the motorway for avoiding traffic congestion is not just strictly forbidden but dangerous and causes accidents easily.
