These were the most popular Hungarian tourist destinations of the past decade

Based on the data of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, Budapest and the cities with thermal spas were the most visited settlements in the last decade. Besides Budapest, Hungarian tourists spent the most nights in Hajdúszoboszló, and Hévíz was the most popular destination of international tourists.

Since 2008, the accommodations located in the Hungarian capital experienced a rise of 4.6 million in the number of reservations. In 2019, this number exceeded 10.7 million nights, Infostart reported.

Hungary may lack sea access, but the country has its own brand of water wealth: it is abundant in thermal water springs, more than 1,300 of them, with 123 in Budapest alone. Spa towns like Hévíz, Hajdúszoboszló, Bük, Zalakaros, and Sárvár have been among the 10 most visited settlements every year.

Hévíz is located near Europe’s largest thermal lake, and the spa town was voted the twelfth best place to visit in the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) ranking in 2020. The Hungarian Central Statistical Office highlighted that

besides Budapest, Hévíz is the only settlement in Hungary where the number of nights spent at commercial accommodations has consistently exceeded 1 million per year since 2016.
