The Historic City Centre of Eger Has Been Renovated

Karpatalja.ma writes that the city centre has been renovated with the funding of the European Union worth 4 billiard forints. The whole investment cost more than 5 billiard forints. The closing ceremony of the rehabilitation programme was held on Monday.

“The renovation is a good example of the government’s constructive work’ said Balázs Rákossy, the Minister of State for the utilization of EU funding. He recalled that Eger is one of the most visited places of Hungary. The region is getting even more attractive, the possibilities are widening and it was rightly awarded with the prize: Touristic Place of the Year in 2015.

He added that Eger is predestined for cultural tourism with its baroque city centre, the work of Géza Gárdonyi, the care of the Catholic Church and monuments of the Turkish era.

Statistics show that the circulation of tourists has increased by 30% since 2010, which is much more than the national par. The number of nights spent in Eger by foreigners has increased by 50% between 2010 and 2014, while the number of nights spent by Hungarians shows a 22% increase. The investments with EU funding contributed to the rise of the city.
