The natural wonders you need to see just a stone’s throw away from Hungary – The High Tatras

Change language:
The High Tatras offer an experience you will never forget. The region has the most beautiful natural attractions: mountain lakes, waterfalls, beautiful hiking trails and ski slopes, dark forests and many more. After spending a couple of days in the mountains, you will not want to go home for sure. Here is a fraction of what the High Tatras have to offer.
The High Tatras are a mountain range along the border of Northern Slovakia and Southern Poland. They are a range of the Tatra Mountains chain.

Luckily, the transportation is amazing. You will reach the High Tatras from Budapest in about six hours by train with two transfers. Once you reach Poprad, the Tatra Electric Railway line takes you anywhere you would want to go in the High Tatras (and its price is included in your train ticket). The train line connects Poprad, Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso, the three major tourists centres of the region.
Poprad
If you go to the High Tatras from Budapest, Poprad will likely be your last stop before heading to the mountains. Poprad is a city in Northern Slovakia at the foot of the High Tatra Mountains. The city is famous for its historic centre and for being a popular holiday resort. It is the biggest town of the Spiš region and the tenth largest city in Slovakia. I would definitely recommend grabbing a nice lunch here before you go to the mountains (cheaper) or before leaving for home.

Starý Smokovec
Starý Smokovec (meaning Old Smokovec, Hungarian Ótátrafüred) is a part of the town of Vysoké Tatry in Northern Slovakia in the Tatras. Tourists and visitors love Starý Smokovec because of the skiing and hiking possibilities it offers. Starý Smokovec used to be the tourist centre of the region, but today it is a smaller and quieter town where you will likely find much cheaper accommodations than in the bigger cities such as Tatranská Lomnica.
