Formed in 1988 at New York’s Ithaca College, vocal group the New York Voices initially operated as a quintet. In 1992, original member Sara Krieger left and was replaced after a long audition process by Lauren Kinhan. Two years later, Caprice Fox also departed, and the remaining singers decided that – despite the inevitable comparisons to their illustrious counterparts The Manhattan Transfer – NYV would remain a quartet for as long as viable. With an unbroken career spanning some 27 years, they now not only stand up to the comparison, but have beaten an entirely unique path for themselves with their distinctive leads, harmonies and stylistic versatility. Moving with total confidence in jazz, R’n’B, Brazilian music, pop and classical settings alike, they have worked with a variety of accompaniments from trio to big band, and even jointly with The Manhattan Transfer. Just how comfortable they are in a big band jazz setting is apparent in the first Grammy Award they won in 1996 for an album recorded with the Count Basie Orchestra, while they celebrated 25 years in the business with the renowned WDR Big Band.
