In Memoriam 2017

Though 2016 is frequently talked about in the sense that the world had lost a lot of famous people, 2017 did not pass without mourning, either. Szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu assembled a list of celebrities from Hungary and all around the world, who did not live to see the beginning of 2018.

The first Hungarian celebrity who passed away in 2017 was businessman Gyögy Klapka in January. He loss by Olofsson Placid, the methuselah Benedictine monk who was 101 years old. József Torgyán, the popular former leader of the Hungarian Smallholders’ Party also died in this month.

January also witnessed the death of Miguel Ferrer, star of Desperate Housewives, Twin Peaks, and NCIS: Los Angeles. Author John Berger, M.A.S.H. star William Christopher, Smurfs’ comic artist Pascal Garray and Hercules actor Mike Connors also passed away in the first month of the year. The world also lost American actress May Tyler Moore, captain of Apollo Richard Hatch, Sopranos star Frank Pellegrino and Black Sabbath’s former keyboard player, Geoff Nicholls. The most shaking news in January was the death of legendary actor John Hurt, who was known for his roles in Alien, The Elephant Man, 1984, and he also played Ollivander in the Harry Potter franchise.

In February two famous Hungarian actors, Kati Berek and Bence Galkó passed away. In the same month, aA Game of Thrones actor Neil Fingleton (Mag the Giant), Aliens actor Bill Paxton and Polish actress Danuta Szaflarska also deceased.

Both Hungarian and worldwide pop music suffered losses in March, as both Happy Gang founder Roland Meggyes and rock’n’roll legend Chuck Berry died.

Hungarians mourned Mátyás Usztics in April, who played Sergeant Karádi in classic cult series Angyalbőrben.

May brought the death of Roger Moore, one of the most famous James Bonds. Soon after that, Soundgarden and Audioslave leader Chris Cornell committed suicide. The third great loss in May came with the tragic death of the Italian music producer Robert Miles, creator of ‘90s hits Fable and Children. Last but not least, Michael Parks also died; he was known for his acting credits in Kill Bill and The Murder of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

In June, multiple award-winning Hungarian author Anna Jókai and guitarist János Széchi passed away. Physiotherapist Anna Dévény, the inventor of the Dévény method also deceased.
