55 Years of Hungarian studies at University of Delhi

Change language:
The Hungarian language was first taught at the University of Delhi in 1969. Now, in 2024, we have 55 years of Hungarian Studies at the University of Delhi. This is a very significant milestone in Hungarian studies in India.
To celebrate the occasion a two-day seminar titled “Multilingualism, Place, History” was held on 20th and 21st May 2024 at the University of Delhi. This unique seminar was made possible by Liszt Institute Hungarian Cultural Centre Delhi and the Hungarian Visiting Lecturer Network.
The seminar had five sessions spread over two days. The organising committee of the seminar was headed by Dr. Dr. Margit Köves, Visiting Assistant Professor of Hungarian at the University of Delhi. Dr. Mariann Erdő, Director of the Liszt Institute Hungarian Cultural Centre Delhi spoke about the Hungarian language teaching and the Cultural Institute. Hungarian can be studied in two places in Delhi: in the Hungarian Information and Cultural Centre and in Delhi University. Fifty five years of Hungarian teaching in Delhi University show that Hungarian language teaching can flourish only by mediating the cultural facets of Hungary. The collaboration between the Hungarian Cultural Centre and the University certainly contributed to the popularity of Hungarian, but the Hungarian membership of the European Union, the 200 scholarships in BA, MA, doctoral and postdoctoral programmes in Hungary also add to the attraction of the language.
